Bought a shabby dining table and want to paint it white. Have already primed with Kilz. Should I paint a coat of slightly darker paint first before I paint with the white, so when I distress that color will show through. Also, should I use a flat or semi-gloss for my final coat? I used a semi-gloss on my chairs, but am wondering if I should use a polyurethane on them to protect the finish. Thanks so much!
We have had to paint a darker color underneath and sand down to it. Depending on the piece, we have even painted the “distressing” ontop of the white! But you shouldn’t have a problem sanding down to the first coat.
We use a semi-gloss finish. That way the piece is easy to clean without being too shiny! The flat will be too matte for a dining table. Hope this helps!
